Orthopaedic examination – Early detection and diagnosis
Orthopaedic examination? Why?
Back pains can have numerous causes, severely affect quality of life and they can even be signs of a life-threatening disease, such as an aortic aneurysm or shingles. The clarification of the causes of back pain requires a thorough orthopaedic examination. The orthopaedic examination serves to clarify causes, to exclude dangerous diseases or nerve damage and to pave the way for therapy which brings back mobility and freedom from pain.
What happens during an orthopaedic examination?
The orthopaedic examination starts with a visual inspection of the vertebral column: Hollow back? Hunchback? Flat back? Are the shoulder blades and waist symmetrical? Are the vertebral column and pelvis straight? Smaller diversions from symmetry are normal, but larger diversions can be an indication of, for example, scoliosis. Postural defects which cause back pains are particularly obvious by checking the gait when the patient takes a few steps back and forth.
In the next examination step, the doctor examines the vertebral column and back muscles for differences and tensions, or to detect painful muscles.
The mobility of the vertebral column is then examined through various test exercises.
If these tests are not possible as part of an orthopaedic examination due to pain, a neurological examination is required to exclude possible nerve damage. In the process, the doctor tests different reflexes among other things. An MRI can provide a view of deeper structures.
