Urological examination – Early detection and diagnosis

Urological examination? Why?

In particular, men over the age of 45 should consider the urological examination as vitally important prevention especially against prostate cancer:  Malignant changes to the prostate are the second most common cause of death from cancer in men. An annual urological check-up ensures that changes to the prostate are detected and treated long before the occurrence of noticeable symptoms in the second half of life.

What happens during a urological examination?

The physical examination begins after a detailed anamnesis interview. In urology, the kidneys and their environment are examined by ultrasound examination, the bladder is examined by palpation, the genitals are examined for skin changes and swelling, and the prostate is examined by rectal examination.
In order for the doctor to gain a more detailed picture of the medical condition of the patient, it is usually necessary to supplement the physical examination with further tests. In particular, the examination of urine and blood as well as any neurological examinations may be advisable.
In order to clarify certain symptoms, other special imaging methods may be used in addition to ultrasound.
A blood test can be prescribed for detecting inflammation or for examining renal function. Hormone status can also be assessed with a blood test and any changes of so-called tumour markers (e.g.: PSA test on prostate specific antigen, AFP - alpha-fetoprotein) can be searched for. Above all, the PSA level is of vital importance for the early detection of a prostate carcinoma. An increase of the PSA level may indicate a tumour. However, at this point, it should also be mentioned that an increased tumour marker does not equate to a certain diagnosis of a malignant disease. Thus, exercise (e.g. cycling) before a PSA test can lead to a conspicuous value without indicating a disease.
