Liposuction or fat suctioning is a method of plastic surgery whereby the fat cells in “problem zones” are extracted via cannulas under the skin. In the process, a liquid is injected into the adipose tissue. It is distributed in the adipose tissue and forms a kind of emulsion. The treating physician can extract the fat through special cannulas after 30 to 60 minutes.

It is important to understand that liposuction has a fundamentally different aim compared to, for example, a diet: Dieting invariably leads to a general reduction in weight, but not necessarily to an optimal figure. The location and quantity of fat cells in the body is determined by our genes. “Problem zones”, for example, fatty deposits on the upper thighs, chest, lower abdomen, hips or upper arms are nothing more than accumulations of fat cells. A diet can shrink such deposits. Liposuction disposes of the deposits and thus changes the body silhouette.

The method can be applied from head to toe: sagged cheeks, double chin, fatty deposits on the upper arms, sides, stomach, bottom, hips, thighs, knee region and calves can be reshaped through liposuction.

The feared yoyo effect from dieting does not occur after liposuction: The fat in the treated area is permanently removed, as extracted fat cells can no longer store fat. They will also not redevelop. Nevertheless, you can gain weight in the treated areas through poor diet or insufficient exercise. However, the weight gain in the treated area would be less and more even in comparison to the reshaped body proportions.

Liposuction is normally performed under local anaesthesia and it is not painful. Patients can resume work 2-3 days after the procedure. Compression clothing should be worn for the subsequent 4-6 weeks to obtain the optimal results. Sporting exercise can be resumed after approx. 4 weeks.

If the liposuction is performed in a high standard establishment such as the Wiener Privatklinik by an experienced specialist, then the probability of complications is very low. Light bruising and swelling disappears quickly. Infections are extremely rare. The latest liposuction systems are easy on the blood vessels, nerves and connective tissue fibres and minimise the risk of serious problems.
