Correction of astigmatism - laser treatment and alternatives
Astigmatism, also known colloquially as curvature of the cornea, is an error of refraction of the cornea of the eye. Astigmatism means that things cannot be clearly distinguished at certain angles. Astigmatism can be corrected with eyeglasses or contact lenses. If the refractive error is not too great, it can also be treated and permanently eliminated by laser treatment. The following guideline may be useful: up to 4 dioptres can be lasered off, as long as the cornea is thick enough.
In laser treatment, part of the anterior cornea is removed in such a manner that the cornea is uniformly curved once again. Consequently the optical characteristics of the cornea will change. Modern high-precision devices can adapt the refractive power of the eye so exactly that one will see perfectly again.
To do this, first a surface area of the cornea is cut open and flapped away. Then the middle layer is stripped off by the laser. Following thorough irrigation, the corneal surface is flapped back. The operation is practically painless. Since the laser uses a wavelength that is not detectable by the human eye, the laser treatment is not noticed at all.
