Successful Sinus Surgery at the Highest Medical Level

„To stop or prevent bleeding, foams are now used that dissolve after a certain period of time.“

Assoc. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Gregor Heiduschka

Wiener Privatklinik (WPK) is setting new standards in the treatment of chronic inflammation of the paranasal sinuses. Between five and twelve percent of Central Europeans suffer from chronic rhinosinusitis, which often requires sinus surgery. Assoc. Prof. Priv.-Doz. Dr. Gregor Heiduschka, a specialist in ear, nose and throat diseases at the WPK, explains: “The aim is to open the sinuses and remove polyps that may have formed as a result of the inflammation.”

In most cases, sinus surgery is now performed endoscopically, in which an endoscope and a camera are inserted through the nose. Professor Heiduschka explains further: “In order to widen the sinuses and restore the natural drainage of nasal mucus, small parts of the skull bone are removed, in particular thinner bone beams that delimit the various sinuses.”

WPK’s Innovative Approach

An innovative approach at WPK involves dispensing with conventional tamponades. Instead of dressing materials, foams are now used that dissolve by themselves after a certain period of time to stop or prevent bleeding. Professor Heiduschka emphasizes: “This minimizes discomfort for patients, as traditional tamponades were often perceived as annoying.”

The sinus surgery is performed under general anesthesia and leaves no visible scars. In addition to treating chronic rhinosinusitis, the operation may also be necessary to remove foreign bodies that get into the sinuses, for example after dental surgery.

The Wiener Privatklinik positions itself as a leading facility for sinus surgery, using state-of-the-art techniques and minimally invasive procedures to provide patients with effective and gentle treatment.
