WPK Sportmedizin Wien

Cardiovascular medicine

The Center of Excellence for Cardiovascular Medicine at Wiener Privatklinik specialises in the diagnosis and treatment of cardiovascular diseases. With innovative technology and a state-of-the-art catheter laboratory, we offer you cardiovascular medicine at the highest level.

Your top address for the minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of vascular disease

Wiener Privatklinik specializes in the modern, minimally invasive diagnosis and treatment of coronary artery disease. Using advanced catheter-based techniques, arterial narrowings can be identified with precision – and, if necessary, treated immediately through the implantation of stents. This enables a particularly gentle therapy with shorter recovery times and a high standard of safety.

This level of care is supported by a state-of-the-art angiography system, allowing for highly precise interventions on the heart and vascular system. The WPK Radiology Center further expands our diagnostic capabilities, offering advanced imaging techniques such as multi-slice CT and MRI – including non-invasive visualization of the coronary arteries via CT angiography.

“Prevention is our top priority – because heart health starts early. Through targeted diagnostics and personal support, we not only want to treat acute illnesses, but also ensure our patients’ quality of life in the long term.”

Diagnosis of vascular diseases

Vascular diseases include all pathological changes to the blood and lymph vessels. They can have various causes, manifest themselves in different ways and have dangerous consequences. The following painless examination methods are used to diagnose vascular diseases:

  • Angiography: Angiography is one of the most common vascular examinations. It is used to visualise the blood and lymph vessels. This is usually done by injecting a contrast agent into the vessel to be examined, followed by an X-ray to obtain detailed images of the vessel structure.
  • Coronary angiography: Coronary angiography is a special form of angiography used to examine the coronary arteries. It is used to detect constrictions or blockages in the coronary arteries that can lead to coronary heart disease.
  • Venous angiography: Venous angiography (phlebography) is mainly used for vein problems in the lower leg. It visualises constrictions, blockages or other abnormalities in the veins. Phlebography is used in the diagnosis of varicose veins or deep vein thrombosis.

Treatment of vascular diseases

Vascular diseases affect arteries, veins or lymph vessels. The most common diseases include:

  • Arterial vascular diseases: In around 90 % of cases, arteriosclerosis is involved, which can lead to narrowing (stenosis), occlusion or aneurysms. The leg arteries (peripheral arterial occlusive disease – PAD), the carotid artery (carotid stenosis) or the renal arteries are often affected.
  • Venous diseases: Common venous diseases are varicose veins, thrombophlebitis, chronic venous insufficiency (CVI) or deep vein thrombosis (DVT).
  • Lymphatic diseases: Diseases of the lymphatic system include lymphoedema and lymphangitis.
  • Vascular malformations (angiodysplasias): These are complex vascular malformations that can lead to various symptoms.

In addition to drug therapies, surgical procedures such as bypass surgery or minimally invasive balloon dilatation are also available for the treatment of vascular diseases. The Vienna Private Clinic uses its interdisciplinary strength to treat vascular diseases comprehensively with expertise from various specialist areas such as angiology, cardiology, neurology and dermatology.
