What’s the medical side of the drug? We asked Prof. Dr. Anton Luger, a renowned expert in endocrinology and metabolism.

Appetite is inhibited

“Ozempic® is a very effective medication for patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus, which also has protective effects on the cardiovascular system and kidney function,” explains Prof. Luger. The drug, which is injected once a week into the upper arm, abdomen or thigh, lowers the blood glucose level depending on the patient’s current blood glucose level. At the same time, the hormone glucagon, which increases the blood sugar level, is suppressed. It also inhibits the appetite and makes the patient feel full. All these factors have a massive effect on body weight. The effect: the drug leads to a weight loss of up to 15 percent. “But the drug is not approved for weight loss alone,” emphasizes Prof. Luger.

Possible side effects

However, the medication also has potential side effects, warns Prof. Luger: it can lead to nausea, flatulence, diarrhea or reflux, and the development of gallstones is also possible. In patients with poorly controlled type 2 diabetes, it can lead to a worsening of diabetic eye disease. people who are overweight and obese take the drug, it is no longer available in sufficient quantities for patients with diabetes,” criticizes Luger. In some countries, another drug with the same active ingredient (semaglutide) is approved in a higher dosage specifically for weight loss – but this is not registered in Austria and is therefore not available.
